New market study, "Bottled Water in France", has been published

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Tue Apr 21 2015

Total volume sales of bottled water continued to increase in 2014, boosted by the efforts of manufacturers to recruit consumers who prefer tap water because it is cheaper but also more convenient, as they do not need to transport it to their homes. They continued to use promotional activities to reduce prices, advertising to boost their reputation, and product innovation to better respond to the needs of consumers.

Competitive Landscape

In terms of off-trade value sales, Nestlé Waters France remained the leading operator in bottled water in 2014. It continued to lead carbonated and still bottled water, and also had a strong position in flavoured bottled water, thanks to the performance of highly-recognised brands such as Perrier, Vittel and Contrex. In 2014 the company gained ground to reach a 31% share of off-trade value sales. Vittel and Perrier were respectively its best performing brands within still bottled water and carbonated bottled water. This player continued to invest in innovation and advertising. In 2014 it also relooked at the packaging for Vittel, whilst for Perrier it continued to extend its range of flavours, with a new reference made with red fruits.

Industry Prospects

Manufacturers of bottled water will probably continue to invest in product innovation, advertising and promotion-based prices to convince consumers to drink bottled water instead of tap water, at least at home. Some of them will probably try to develop further sales on-trade and through distribution channels which are less common in order to target on-the-go consumption. As a result, smaller packaging in bottled water should gain ground in the future, notably slim cans. At the same time, producers will probably also invest in a wider flavour variety in order to offer healthier soft drinks alternatives to consumers. Their efforts will be positively impacted by the health and wellness trend, as water is perceived as natural and better for health compared with other soft drinks.
