Leading coffee companies ran aggressive price promotions in these channels in an effort to bolster volume sales and strengthen brand loyalty. Smaller players struggled to compete in the face of this, with many having to either withdraw from the category or focus on distributing their brands via traditional channels such as independent small grocers.

Competitive Landscape

Engin Ltd remained the leading company in coffee in value sales terms in 2014, claiming an overall share of 6%. The company’s Moccona was the leading brand in instant coffee in value sales terms with a share of 7%. Nur Co and Nestlé Azerbaijan Ltd ranked second and third overall respectively in value terms, with both claiming shares of just under 6%. Like Engin, these two companies were focused on the instant coffee category, Nur Co with the MacCoffee brand and Nestlé with its world famous Nescafé range. Other prominent players in coffee included Aztrade MMC, Tchibo GmbH, Beta Group, Zolotye Kupola ZAO and Le Cafe Soluvel Rus OOO. The overall company ranking order differed slightly in retail volume terms, with Nur Co finishing first, followed by Nestlé, Tchibo and Engin
