AFH products grew by 1% in 2014 in current terms, but there were significant differences between AFH tissue and AFH hygiene. AFH tissue sales were affected more by the economic downturn. Especially consumer foodservice and travel accommodation outlets’ demand for AFH was affected, while elsewhere volume demand was flat. Total volume growth for the category was negative at -1%. However, the dynamics of AFH hygiene were different, and AFH incontinence sales grew in both volume and current value terms, by 2% and 3% respectively. As the Finnish population continued ageing, demand for AFH hygiene maintained growth regardless of the economic factors.

Competitive Landscape

The most important players in AFH products in 2014 were SCA Hygiene Products Oy Ab and Metsä Tissue Oyj. These two companies are strong in the large AFH toilet paper and AFH paper towels categories, SCA with its Tork brand and Metsä Tissue Oyj with the Katrin brand. After SCA Hygiene Products Oy Ab acquired Georgia-Pacific Finland Oy in 2012, the Lotus Professional AFH brand was rebranded as Tork over 2013-2014. However, this did not have major changes in terms of share as these are based on long-term supply contracts.

Industry Prospects

AFH products are expected to see a CAGR of 2% in constant value terms over the forecast period. For AFH tissue growth will remain limited in 2015, but be healthier towards the end of the forecast period as the Finnish economy recovers. Growth will represent recovery from volume drops seen over 2014-2015. In the case of AFH hygiene products the ageing population will drive volume sales as previously.
