Report Published: "Large Cooking Appliances in Portugal"

Large cooking appliances experienced an increase in volume sales during 2014 after three years of consistent volume declines, with growth fuelled by the improvements seen in the economic environment. The unemployment rate in Portugal has been falling consistently over the course of the last year, while consumer confidence continued growing. After several years of economic hardship during which consumers generally opted to prepare damaged and malfunctioning large cooking appliances, the recent improvement and economic situation led many Portuguese households to replace their older large cooking appliances. Built-in large cooking appliances and cooker hoods recorded particularly positive growth during 2014, while volume sales of freestanding cookers continued to decline.

Competitive Landscape

Teka was able to maintain its position as the leading brand in large cooking appliances in 2014, although the gap between the brand and its major competitors continue to narrow towards the end of the review period. The favourable price/quality ratio of brand’s mid-priced large cooking appliances is the main reason for the popularity of Teka products in the category. Towards the end of 2013, Teka’s HL 840 oven was voted as Escolha do Consumidor (Consumer Choice) for the second time. Escolha do Consumidor is a private brand evaluation system which classifies brands and products according to consumer feedbacks and enquiries. Teka managed to reverse a slow but steady decline in its volume share in large cooking appliances during 2014 as it benefited from the 2013 insolvency of rival player Fagor.

Industry Prospects

Following recent improvements in the economic situation in Portugal, volume sales of large cooking appliances are likely to grow over the forecast period, making a return to positive growth after the declines recorded in the category over the review period. Similar growth rates are expected in built-in large cooking appliances and freestanding large cooking appliances during 2014. Although the penetration of freestanding cookers is declining, a substantial proportion large part of traditional Portuguese households continue to prefer freestanding large cooking appliances to built-in large cooking appliances. Furthermore, purchasing a cooker is generally substantially cheaper than purchasing an oven plus a built-in hob.
