By continuously investing in new and increasingly advanced products, private label players were able to record positive growth in sanitary protection in 2014. Specialists agree that despite the efforts of manufacturers to launch new sanitary protection products with a focus on improved ergonomics as the main area of innovation, the added value of these products is not as noticeable as in other tissue and hygiene categories such as nappies/diapers/pants. With price dictating demand in the category, private label found yet more space to grow in 2014.

Procter & Gamble led sanitary protection in both volume and value terms during 2014. Although the company is losing share, particularly to private label, Procter & Gamble has been able to maintain its dominant position in sanitary protection, registering a 52% value share and 41% volume share in 2014. The company has three strong brands operating in the category, Evax, Tampax and Ausonia. While Evax and Ausonia are present in pantyliners and towels, Tampax is the company’s brand in tampons. Evax meanwhile, is the leading brand in both pantyliners and towels, while Ausonia targets a more limited number of consumers. Although risks it cannibalising sales of the Evax brand, Ausonia is a strategic label for the company as it has been present in the country for many years and achieved value sales of €5 million in 2014.

Industry Prospects

The highly developed and well-established category of sanitary protection is expected to remain stable over the forecast period. Private label products and promotional campaigns are expected to continue impacting unit prices, while manufacturers are likely to continue investing in new products to stimulate demand. Ergonomics and absorption capacity are expected to drive product developments, even in private label. The quality of private label sanitary protection products is expected to continue improving over the forecast period, with retailers set to continue investing in specific private label ranges featuring economy and premium products respectively.
