In 2014 the weak economic performance combined with several tax increases, resulting from the recently approved fiscal reform that entered into force in January 2014, had a noticeable impact on consumers’ disposable income. Many consumers limited their spending on entertainment and other non-essential activities such as dining out. This was reflected in full-service restaurants, whose sales rose by 5% during the year reaching Mx$419.6 billion, but this was a slower rate when compared with the previous year.

Competitive Landscape

In 2014, Wal-Mart de México SAB de CV was the leading player within full-service restaurants with its VIPs, El Porton, La Finca and Ragazzi brands. Wal-Mart’s restaurant brands are well positioned among consumers and they totalled 344 outlets in 2014. During this year, Alsea SAB de CV acquired the restaurant brands from Wal-Mart in a Mx$8,200 million transaction. The acquisition was approved by the federal commission of competition in May 2014.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period, full-service restaurants is expected to record consistent growth through a CAGR of 2% in outlet terms and a value CAGR of 2% at constant 2014 prices. Growth is expected to be driven by more accelerated lifestyles in urbanised areas, where people are likely to eat out more often. In highly populated areas such as Mexico City and the metropolitan area, Guadalajara and Monterrey, commuting times are getting longer, making it very hard for people to go back home to eat lunch during weekdays. This is likely to be one of the main drivers of the full-service restaurants category over the forecast period.
