The growth of coffee sales stabilised at 3% in 2014, in off-trade volume terms, as Singapore’s coffee market became saturated. Much of the growth was driven by promotions and discounts at the off-trade channel. Coffee manufacturers also tried to premiumise the products, ie using arabica coffee beans or fortifying coffee with additional nutrients. All of this allowed coffee to maintain its growth pace in the off-trade channel.

Competitive Landscape

Nestlé Singapore Pte Ltd continued to lead coffee with 41% off-trade value share in 2014. The economies of scale of the world’s coffee giant allowed it to undercut local rivals on price, offering attractive promotions whilst compromising on quality, especially during a time when the price of both robusta and arabica green coffee beans went up.

Industry Prospects

Coffee is expected to increase by 1% CAGR in total volume sales over the forecast period, which is lower than the growth rate of the review period. On one hand, it is an expected result of a saturated market, especially for instant coffee, where price wars are going on at most retail stores. On another hand, it reflects the gradual shift from business-to-consumer to business-to-business sales. Some manufacturers see a huge potential for office sales because working adults, the major consumer group of coffee products, tend to drink more coffee at their offices during weekdays than at their homes during weekends.
