McDonald’s remained the clear leader in fast food with a 24% value share in 2014. The company achieved this through strong brand recognition, a high sales per outlet ratio and continuous marketing efforts over a long period of time. McDonald’s is located in areas with high consumer traffic, for example in city centres, shopping areas and motorways, and benefited from this spread of locations.

Industry Prospects

The number of fast food outlets is expected to continue to rise slowly over the forecast period, while value sales at constant 2014 prices will decline to €238 million by 2019. This will be due to strong competition from other categories and the growing number of outlets from international operators. Fast food will need to defend against its perception of causing negative health issues. Strong competition from full-service restaurants will not allow high price increases and therefore growth of fast food will be limited over the forecast period.
