The jeans category is very saturated. Some brands, such as Levi’s, specialise in jeans, while others such as Gap offer jeans together with jackets, and activewear. In general, jeans are casual clothing items and if durable can last a long time. This naturally creates fluctuation in demand for jeans and limits the number of items each consumer will purchase over a period of time. However, fashion trends dictate new styles of jeans which creates an incentive to by a new "fashionable" pairs. For example in 2011, brightly coloured jeans became very popular, then skinny, ankle-length jeans took off. The boyfriend jeans with loose leg and the low rise that were so popular over 2013-2014 changed to high-rise flare jeans in 2015.

Competitive Landscape

Overall, well-established companies – VF Corp, Gap and Levi Strauss – remained in the lead in jeans in Canada. These, however, have been increasingly challenged by other brands, including private label such as expanding Joe Fresh by Loblaws, Denver Hayes by Canadian Tire and branded products such as expanding Forever 21 and H&M. To maintain the lead, combat the competition and remain relevant to consumers, manufacturers provide product development and marketing support to support their brands’ sales as well as seek partnerships with retailers to develop exclusive product lines, including products in lower price ranges.
