Continuing economic difficulties were a major factor influencing cigarette sales in 2014. The Slovenian government, in order to reduce the budget deficit, once again increased excise tax for tobacco products, which was immediately translated into the prices of cigarettes. Consumers on the other hand, are becoming more and more price sensitive and are looking for alternatives in order to manage their budgets, therefore are shifting towards cheaper cigarette brands or smoking tobacco. Tobacco producers have recognised this trend and continue to offer famous and popular brands, not only as cigarettes, but also as smoking tobacco options.

Competitive Landscape

The Slovenian cigarettes category is highly competitive with dominance of world-known, leading multinational companies. However, the strongest player is Tobacna Ljubljana, part of the Imperial Tobacco Group, which retained its leading position in 2014 and managed to keep its share almost unchanged (41%). It was followed by Phillip Morris International and Japan Tobacco Inc with 27% and 18% value shares, respectively. All companies are trying to introduce new products in order to gain share and attract new consumers as well as compete at POS advertising level, while striving for the best shelf position and product visibility.

Industry Prospects

Cigarettes is expected to suffer from consumers switching towards alternative smoking tobacco products, as they are more affordable to price-sensitive consumers. Therefore, the category is projected to keep contracting, while the adverse economic situation will prevail in the country. However, once the economic situation stabilises, cigarettes are predicted to re-gain share. Furthermore, the Slovenian government is actively increasing excise taxes on smoking tobacco and is minimising the gap in prices between these two categories, therefore fewer cigarette smokers will be switching to alternatives and the decline of cigarettes will not be as significant during the forecast period.
