Turkish telecommunication market is following the same trend of rapid growth as its economy, with higher value services such as fibr e -optic broadband and 3G/4G services adding upside to the operator's revenues. However, the Prime Minister's comments that Turkey should stop developing 4G services and skip straight to 5G add downside to our outlook. This could lead BMI to downgrade its LTE outlook should the 4G spectrum auctions postponed to August 2015 be cancelled or delayed again.

Key Data

Data services continue to grow through 3G uptake, data from telecoms authority ICTA suggests that 3G services uptake increased 16.5% y-o-y to Q1 2015 from 51mn to 59.4mn

Fibre internet has shown similarly strong growth with subscriptions up 18.5% from 1.2mn in Q114 to 1.54mn in Q115 according to ICTA. BMI believes that this strong growth will continue and bode well for the internet growth and consequently the internet penetration will increase to 47.5% in 2019 from 43.5% in 2014.

While broadband access will remain predominantly on mobile, fixed broadband will continue to perform well because of customer's need for speeds. Broadband connections will increase to 10.2mn in 2019 from 8.8mn in 2014.

Key Trends And Developments

BMI has not made any revisions to its forecasts in Q415. Strong growth of 3G gives BMI reason to believe that once launched 4G uptake will follow a similar pattern. Turkey was due to have 4G spectrum auctions last year, but they were postponed to May 2015 and then postponed again to August 2015. The announcement to delay the spectrum auction to August follows recent statements from Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan suggesting that Turkey should skip 4G and move straight from 3G to 5G, claiming that the fifth-generation mobile technology would be ready 'within the next two years'.
