The resilient and innovative life insurance companies - most of which are subsidiaries or affiliates of international majors - should continue to achieve good growth in Indonesia over the medium and long term . Among those Indonesian households who understand and can afford it, life insurance is well established as a conduit for organised savings. In the short term , the slowing of the economy will have an impact on both the life and the non-life segments. In the non-life segment, premiums remain depressed because of price competition in the important motor vehicle sub-sector.

Indonesia is rightly regarded as one of the most prospective national markets for insurance globally. With annual premiums of over USD15bn, it already ranks as a medium-sized market. Although it is underdeveloped by many metrics (with life and non-life density of USD45 and USD16 per capita and penetration of 1.3% and 0.5% of GDP, respectively), it is easy to identify growth drivers over the longer term. In the case of the life segment, growth will be driven by further growth in household incomes, by increases in the numbers of people who understand and value life insurance and by innovation on the part of the insurance companies themselves. In the case of non-life companies, growth should come from the further development of the economy and rising demand for health insurance as Indonesians gain a better understanding of the limitations of the state-backed JKN health insurance program.
