With the rising consumer demand for convenience, as well as manufacturers’ need to continually innovate in this "fad-driven" market, there remains a trend towards premixes and ready-to-drink cocktails. Brandhouse Beverages’ Smirnoff Boxed range of cocktails, first launched in late 2012, saw the introduction of new flavour variants in 2013. In 2014 the company introduced Smirnoff premixed spirit coolers in convenient and portable single-serve metal beverage cans.

Competitive Landscape

The South African Breweries led RTDs/high-strength premixes with a 42% total volume share in 2014. The company’s Redd’s Dry, Redd’s Original and Brutal Fruit brands held first, second and fourth positions respectively overall. In third position was Halewood International’s Red Square spirit-based RTD brand. Distell Group held second position overall, and its Klipdrift & Cola spirit-based RTD was the fifth biggest brand within the category in 2014.

Industry Prospects

It is thought that there may be more premixed cocktails launched to the market, as other RTD brands could look at the viability of the bigger bag-in-box format. It is possible that other spirits brands may enter the category and create new premixed cocktail variants, as they look to appeal to consumers’ demand for convenience. There may also be a move towards bigger pack sizes within metal beverage cans in order to meet consumers’ demand for convenience, as well as value for money.
