New market study, "Apparel Accessories in South Korea", has been published

Ties continued to decline in 2014. The main factor behind this decline was companies recommending no-tie business wear which is referred to as a "cool-biz look" during the summer. As the government set recommended temperatures for the workplace, many public and private companies followed energy saving strategies to cut down on air conditioning costs. In addition, the casual business culture became more natural for most companies. They set one or two days a week to wear business casual without ties and employees like to wear rather informal wear at their place of work. Although this was not applied to some kinds of jobs such as sales personnel or consultants who have to deal with customers face to face, many internal office workers now enjoy their business casual apparel without ties and this trend led to its decline.

Competitive Landscape

adidas led apparel accessories in 2014, with 8% value share, as it offers various types of products and actively markets to the younger generation by holding art performances or pop artists fan meeting in South Korea. Frl Korea ranked second with 6% value share and recorded the highest value sales growth of 30%. Nike ranked third amongst brands as it has a diverse product line-up and advantages in sports hats.

Industry Prospects

As the South Korean economy is expected to record rather low growth during the forecast period, apparel accessories such as scarves, hats/caps and gloves are expected to show stable growth because they are an efficient and a fairly inexpensive way for consumers to coordinate with their apparel. However, overall apparel accessories is expected to decline as ties will continue to drag down value sales growth over the forecast period, as companies pursue the casual dress code with a no-tie business look.
