Spectacles in the Netherlands - New Market Report

Sunglasses recorded the fastest value growth in 2015 of 4%. As the economy began to recover, this was reflected in the eyewear market. Consumers were able to spend more on sunglasses and increasingly chose to buy designer sunglasses with a higher unit price. This reflected the trend of spectacles and sunglasses as fashion objects. Traditionally, this was a strong trend among women, who may own multiple pairs, although more men also began to use sunglasses as a fashion object, rather than just as a useful object. Nevertheless, for men the main driver for a purchase remained eye protection. As such, males usually own only one pair, although those with higher disposable incomes may buy multiple pairs for different activities.

Competitive Landscape

The spectacles category was characterised by large manufacturers with international presence. Especially in sunglasses, premium brands gained in popularity. In spectacle lenses, Essilor led the category in 2014, followed at a distance by Hoya. Products offered at affordable prices with limited compromise on quality were quite successful. Spectacle frames was led by Safilo and Luxottica Nederland BV. Safio includes non-premium brands in their portfolios and as such catered to the demand for affordable spectacles. In sunglasses, Luxottica and Safilo led, boasting high-performing brands such as Ray-Ban and Polaroid, respectively. Through strong licenses and own brands, these manufacturers were able to maintain leading positions in the category.

Industry Prospects

The constant value CAGR of 2% witnessed over the review period for spectacles is expected to improve over the forecast period, with an anticipated value CAGR of 3% at constant 2015 prices. Factors likely to affect this growth are the increase in the population with myopia and hyperopia, which in turn is due to an ageing population, as well as increased use of devices with screens.
