Ghana's pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors will continue to garner much interest from international investors given the huge market growth potential. In the short term, however, risks relating to healthcare funding, insurance expansion and economic growth will remain elevated.

Headline Expenditure Projections

Pharmaceuticals: GHS1.01bn (USD329mn) in 2014 to GHS1.18bn (USD318mn) in 2015; +16.5% in local currency terms and -3.3% in US dollar terms. Forecast unchanged from Q 3 15 in local currency terms, but up graded in US dollar terms.
Healthcare: GHS5.80bn (USD1.89bn) in 2014 to GHS6.56bn (USD1.78bn) in 2015; +13.3% in local currency terms and -6.0% in US dollar terms. Forecast in line with Q315.

Risk/Reward Index

In BMI's Q415 Middle East and Africa (MEA) regional Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Risk/Reward Index, Ghana scores 33.1 points out of 100, below the regional average of 41.1. Ghana has moved up one place to 20th out of a total of 31 countries, posting a better performance in terms of Risks than Rewards. BMI notes that the depreciating Ghanaian cedi is having a negative impact on short-term pharmaceutical market growth, which is a key contributor the country's low score this quarter.
