New Report Available: Watches in Sweden

2015 can be referred to as the year when so-called "smart watches", which integrate a traditional watch with ICT and computer technology, became an established and fully defined category. The highly-hyped launch of Apple Watch was announced by the CEO Tim Cook in September 2014 and was available for pre-order from April 2015. Many rumours surrounded the launch, as with any Apple launch. Smart watches compete directly with watches, which they resemble in form and function, as well as offering additional features and benefits. The debate has raged among watch manufacturers and brands as to whether smart watches should be viewed as a threat or opportunity or even ignored altogether.

Competitive Landscape

Swatch Group continued to lead watches in 2014, with a 15% share of retail value sales. While this represented a slight drop in share, compared with 2013, the company’s long list of strong and prominent brands, such as Longines, Tissot, Certina, Swatch and Omega, makes it the "natural" leader in a highly fragmented competitive landscape.

Industry Prospects

In the short term, Apple Watch did not sell nearly as well as earlier Apple launches (such as the iPhone). However, Apple’s launch suggests that it has identified the product as a viable opportunity; and the forecast period is expected to see the further development of this new subcategory. This is likely to impact significantly on traditional watches. Many consumers who wear only one watch, mostly for function reasons, might opt for a smart watch instead of a traditional watch. If the price is competitive, the additional features offered smart watches will attract more interest.
