Jordan 's telecoms market suffered a tough year in 2014, with declines in both mobile and fixed voice subscriptions. While the fixed voice decrease is part of an overall global trend, the one in mobile came from a saturated market with a majority of prepaid subscriptions, many being discounted as inactive after stronger regulatory pressure on registration. We do not expect strong growth in the market, and believe that operators will look to deepen and not widen their customer base. The launch of 4G services, and the possible move towards converged plans, ha s the potential to drive revenues upwards, though competition will remain strong.

Key Data

Jordan's mobile market contracted in 2014, declining 3.4% y-o-y to reach 9.82mn subscribers

The fixed voice market also went down, declining 1.2% y-o-y to reach 375,483 connections

However, the broadband market expanded, going up 18.5% to 1.78mn, thanks to strong growth amongst mobile broadband subscriptions

Key Developements

Higher disposable income should benefit the uptake of 4G services in the market, as operators look to improve their revenue streams through greater usage and services. As the market becomes saturated, deepening becomes more important than widening, meaning that operators look to retain and upsell their current customer base as opposed to prioritise expansion. We believe this is the case in Jordan, and will develop even further with greater 4G penetration. Zain has launched 4G services in February, Orange followed in May and Umniah obtained a 4G licence in June 2015.
