Analgesics in the United Kingdom - New Market Research Report

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Tue Dec 22 2015

Analgesics is one of the largest and most significant product areas in OTC, accounting for 27% of overall value sales in 2015. However, this product area is largely mature. Furthermore, analgesics also faced considerable negative press coverage in 2015, including BBC's Panorama programme Hooked on Painkillers in November 2015 and the launch of Opoid Painkiller Addiction Awareness Day in September, alongside a host of newspaper articles. While the media is mainly focused on Rx analgesics, this negative publicity resulted in many consumers becoming less likely to take systemic analgesics in response to minor pain or ailments, particularly as the health and wellness trend is having an increasing impact on consumer habits. Adult ibuprofen saw 2% retail volume decline as a result of this trend, while adult aspirin also saw marginal decline and adult acetaminophen saw retail volume stagnation.

Competitive Landscape

Reckitt Benckiser (RB) is the clear leader in analgesics and accounted for close to 26% value share in 2015. The company benefits from the strength of its Nurofen brand, which alone accounted for 20% value share in the year and offers a wide range including adult and paediatric ibuprofen, combination products and topical analgesics/anaesthetic, alongside value-added formats such as Nurofen Meltlets. The company also offers numerous other distinctive brands such as Ralgex and Tiger Balm in topical analgesics/anaesthetic or Disprin in aspirin.

Industry Prospects

The health and wellness trend is expected to continue to impact sales of analgesics in the forecast period. Consumers will continue to shift their focus from treating symptoms to improving health, with many thus seeking to restrict their consumption of analgesics. This trend is expected to result in adult analgesics in particular suffering, with retail volume sales set to decline by over 4% in the forecast period. Aspirin is expected to suffer from a less healthy image in comparison to many other analgesics and will see 9% retail volume decline, while adult ibuprofen is expected to be hit by Nurofen being the first choice for many of those seeking to alleviate symptoms and will see similar decline.
