Overall home video retail volume sales are expected to increase by 3% in 2014, driven mainly by stable demand for digital TVs. This was driven by new purchases and replacement of existing TV sets. This is well-supported by various housing legislation implemented by the government, some of which includes giving singles entitlement to purchase flats, giving priority and financial assistance to senior citizens applying for studio apartments, and grants for lower-income consumers. These policies and scheme created more opportunities for housing ownership in Singapore which created stable demand for TVs in the country. Furthermore, 2014 is the year of FIFA World Cup, leading to increased promotions and purchases of good quality TV sets.

Competitive Landscape

Samsung Asia Pte Ltd continued to lead sales in 2013 with a 36% volume share. Samsung built a prominent presence in retail stores with attractive display layouts and a variety of TVs to cater to different consumers’ needs. In addition, Samsung also gained attention and established its brand name as consumers are familiar with the company’s mobile phones. To further position itself close to consumers Samsung recently opened the largest Samsung Experience Store in Singapore, aiming to create a personalised and welcoming place for consumers to understand and try its products. Samsung was awarded the Best Premium Smart LED and Best LED TV and Best 4K TV in Tech Awards 2014, organised by Singapore Press Holdings.

Industry Prospects

Home video is expected to grow by a 2% volume CAGR over the forecast period, driven mainly by stable demand for digital TVs. The average unit price of TVs is predicted to remain stable, accounted for by higher quality digital TVs, which comes at a higher price. Home videos also tie in with modern technology such as a mobile phone remote control. Manufacturers such as Samsung, LG and HTC leverage on the benefits of smartphones as an essential product in daily life and introduced remote apps. This allows consumers to control TV function and content via the apps in their smartphone.
