The short-term outlook for Slovakia's power sector is relatively weak, with declining output from thermal and coal generation leading to an overall contraction in total generation in 2015. The expansion of nuclear power does mean, however, that from 2016 onwards we expect to see substantial increases in total generation in Slovakia, with nuclear generation expected to increase by nearly a quarter in 2016 alone. The power infrastructure project pipeline remains dominated by nuclear power at present, with few other investments on the horizon, though there is scope for expansion of hydropower should agreements with neighbouring states prove successful.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

Investments in nuclear power mean we expect this sector to drive overall growth in the Slovak power industry, with nuclear power generation forecast to increase from 14.1TWh in 2015 to 21.2TWh in 2024, while total generation will increase from 25.1TWh to 32.6TWh.

Slovenske Elektrarne's (SE) works at the Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant are reportedly now 79% complete, with reactor 3 expected to come online in 2016.

Consumption will increase slowly in 2015 before a slight acceleration from 2016 onwards, though annual growth will remain below 2%, leading to a small improvement in the energy shortfall.
