In 2015, electronics and appliance specialist retailers registered its first positive performance since 2008, recording current value growth of 1%. During 2014 and 2015 the channel was heavily affected by the decision of the Czech National Bank to fix the exchange rate below CZK27 to €1, which led to an increase in electronics and appliance imports. As the majority of products are imported, this led to slower growth than in other channels. A second important factor was the ongoing commoditisation of these products, with key differentiators remaining price and brand positioning. Retailers therefore reduced their margins, thus impacting value sales. Thirdly, the channel was impacted by the high share of sales accounted for by internet retailers, which undermined the performance of store-based retailers.

Competitive Landscape

In 2015, the channel remained concentrated in the hands of a few key players. The leading three companies held similar value shares. Datart International ranked first with an 11% value share. The company’s position can be attributed to its presence in major shopping malls, with selling spaces of around 1,000 sq m. The company also has a wide portfolio of products and also invests in television and print advertising.

Industry Prospects

New technologies in consumer appliances and electronics may drive the performance of the channel over the forecast period. New launches of popular brands of mobile phones, personal computers or televisions could boost the revenues of electronics specialists. The commoditisation trend in consumer electronics and appliances, however, will also continue over the forecast period, with every innovation being immediately copied and improved. The share of private label products is currently very low in electronics and appliance specialist retailers. This may change towards the end of the forecast period if private label players are able to provide more economical alternatives with the same features as branded products.
