Newly released market study: Mixed Retailers in Bulgaria

In 2015, mixed retailers achieved sales of BGN41 million, up by a dramatic 41% on the previous year. Growth was much higher than the 21% CAGR seen over the review period. The vast majority of the growth came from department stores, which increased its sales by a massive 99% in 2015. The first Notos galleries store in Bulgaria, which is located in the Sofia Ring Mall, opened in September 2014, introducing the first shop-in-shop concept to the country.

Competitive Landscape

In November, 2014, Greece-based department store operator Notos Holdings opened an outlet branded Notosgalleries in Sofia Ring Mall. The new department store is located on three levels and covers 6,500 sq m (approximately 10% of the centre’s total commercial area). The new entrant is a direct competitor to Debenhams as it is the only retailer that has the same store format in the country. Since this move, Nostgalleries moved up the ranking from fifth place in 2014 to first in the following year, taking its share from 3% to 24% in just a twelve month period.

Industry Prospects

Over the forecast period, mixed retailers is expected to achieve a CAGR of 8% in value sales at constant 2015 prices, which will be lower than the CAGR of 19% achieved over the review period. Nonetheless, the strong performance will chiefly reflect new store openings, both in department stores and in variety stores. The arrival of Notosgalleries and the opening of an additional outlet by either one of the operators are projected to increase channel size by one third. However, uncertainty around the economy may dampen consumer confidence further, leading to lower than expected growth for this channel in the mid term.
