New Report Available: Coffee in Thailand

The country’s developing coffee culture and hectic lifestyles are the two key factors driving sales of coffee in Thailand in 2015. Thai consumers are finding more ways of enjoying coffee other than consuming coffee as a stimulant in the morning or during the working day. The number of frequent coffee drinkers in Thailand is increasing, in line with the increase in the number of occasions that coffee is consumed and the growing number of café and foodservice outlets in the country that serve coffee. However, even though there are more cafés and coffee shops, the economic slowdown continues to restrain some consumers from purchasing coffee on-trade. Off-trade coffee makers are finding opportunities in the increasingly urban lifestyles of consumers, which see them having less time to dedicate to the preparation of coffee and to purchase such products from retail outlets. 2015 saw more launches of coffee in the 3-in-1 format and a variety of flavours being introduced to the retail channel that were previously only available on-trade in Thailand.

Competitive Landscape

Nestlé (Thai) Ltd continues to dominate coffee in Thailand, accounting for a value share of 60% in 2015. The company has a longstanding presence in Thailand, with it offers a wide variety of coffee products under its Nescafé umbrella brand that target various segments, including Nescafé, Nescafe Style, Nescafé Taster's Choice, Nescafé Dolce Gusto, amongst others. Additionally, it attracts consumers with strong marketing campaigns both offline and online throughout the year, while it launched several innovative new products over the review period.

Industry Prospects

Busy lifestyles resulting from the growing amount of working adults in the country, allied to population aging, will continue to support the growth of coffee over the forecast period. The country’s developing coffee culture will see consumers increasingly turn to not just instant type but other coffee types, including fresh ground coffee beans and pods. Despite the country’s economic downturn, Thai consumers continue to purchase coffee for its stimulating effects both in the morning and to keep them awake at night when necessary, as well as their favourite daytime drink.
