New market study, "Tea in Venezuela", has been published

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Mon Mar 14 2016

For many years, the expansion and development of tea has been jeopardised by low disposable income, a lack of tea consumption culture, strong competition from coffee and limited new product development and advertising. In 2015, the lack of access to foreign exchange accounted almost entirely for the plunge in the supply of tea in Venezuela.

Competitive Landscape

Alfonzo Rivas & Cía led hot tea in 2015, recording a value share of 44% - a seven percentage point decline from 2014. The company manages the manufacturing and distribution rights of the McCormick brand, which boasts a long tradition and well-established reputation, not only in tea but also table sauces and herbs and spices. Alfonzo Rivas & Cía manages the widest variety of flavours in fruit/herbal tea, ranging from the most common chamomile infusion to mixes of red fruits. Unilever Andina de Venezuela, with its Lipton brand, ranked second in 2015 with a value share of 16%.

Industry Prospects

The scope for expansion within tea will remain limited due to factors such as limited disposable incomes, low awareness and a lack of dynamism regarding new product developments. The consumer base of tea drinkers will continue to be concentrated in mid and high income households, with low income consumers having little incentive to purchase tea.
