Modern grocery retailers increased by 3%, whilst traditional grocery retailers declined by 4% in current value terms. The economic downturn led consumer sentiment to stall, and the spread of MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) encouraged consumers to stay at home and purchase items through internet retailing, leading to the slow growth of grocery retailers.

Competitive Landscape

The supermarket brand E-Mart led grocery retailers with a value share of 16% in 2015. Homeplus was the second biggest brand, with a value share of 11%, followed by Lotte Mart from Lotte Shopping with a value share of 8%. Convenience stores CU from BGF Retail and GS 25 from GS Retail ranked fourth and fifth in 2015, each with a value share of 6%.
