A prolonged period of declining sales has left a mark on non-grocery specialists, with the market being more fragmented than grocery. As a result, a large number of small players, of which a considerable number are locals which failed to consolidate or grow in size, are being left to their own devices. A single company cannot endure longer periods recording financial a loss without support from the Mother company or elsewhere and some local companies did not have anyone to help. In 2015, there was a further discontinuation of operations for some smaller domestic companies like Tradexco, Cisalfa and Elektromaterijal but also for some internationals like Baumax and Marks & Spencer.

Competitive Landscape

Non-grocery specialists is a fragmented retailing area, with the top 10 players accounting for only 30% of total value sales, compared to 71% in grocery. Amongst the mixture of companies dealing with different kinds of merchandise, dm-Drogerie Markt sticks out of the crowd as the leader, accounting for 6% of value sales. There are only two Croatian companies among the top 10: Pevec and E Plus.

Industry Prospects

Consolidation is the buzzword for non-grocery specialists in the future. With only a third of total retail going through them, these players cannot support such a variety of directly competing companies. By merging and especially via bankruptcies, each non-grocery specialist area will end up having one outstanding leader and maybe one or two followers. It should be noted that none of the non-grocery specialists have reached the HRK2 billion mark widely believed to be the minimal long-term-survival size of a grocery chain.
