Tea in South Korea - New Market Report

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.
Published: Tue Mar 22 2016

Tea in South Korea continued to record negative growth over the review period, both in off-trade volume and value terms. Green tea continued to decline in popularity in 2015, but herbal/fruit tea and other tea recorded sound growth. This was mainly due to the discontinuation of the green tea bag business by the leading player in South Korea, AmorePacific. Consumers could no longer find AmorePacific’s instant green teas in major hypermarkets such as E-Mart and Homeplus. As a result, many consumers switched to other types of instant teas such as herbal/fruit teas and premium black teas.

Competitive Landscape

As a result in AmorePacific discontinuing its off-trade green tea and instant tea business, Dongsuh Foods Co was catapulted to the number one spot in tea with a 32% off-trade value share in 2015. In 2015, AmorePacific saw the biggest decrease in value sales, while Dongsuh Foods Co experienced the largest value sales increase. AmorePacific drastically changed its strategy for tea in 2015 and discontinued the distribution and sale of many of its retail tea products.
