On the whole, juice and juice drinks are not faring well in the US, experiencing off-trade volume declines of 4% and 1%, respectively in 2015. The core reason that sales of juice are in decline is the pervasive consumer aversion to sugar and artificial ingredients. The high sugar content of many juices has turned health-conscious consumers away from these beverages. This trend is having a particularly damaging effect on juices which are not 100% juice, as these are more likely to have added sugar in their ingredients lists, pushing away consumers who may have once perceived these products as favourable compared with carbonates.

Competitive Landscape

The Coca-Cola Co reached sales of US$2.9 billion in juice in the off-trade channel in 2015; the largest of any juice brand owner. The Coca-Cola Co’s 18% value share stems from strong brands such as Minute Maid and Simply. Despite The Coca-Cola Co being the leading company in juice, the leading individual brand remained Tropicana from Tropicana Products Inc, with a 7% off-trade value share in 2015; slightly higher than The Coca-Cola Co’s Minute Maid brand, which also held a 7% share.

Industry Prospects

In the forecast period juice is anticipated to follow the ongoing premiumisation trend, be it in the form of exotic juices, or premium not from concentrate cold press juices. Continued concerns surrounding unnecessary and unhealthy added sugar will impact juice drinks the most, but even the high naturally occurring sugar content in juice is expected to negatively impact volume sales in the category. As such, in the off-trade channel juice is forecast to see a negative volume CAGR of 2%, whilst a negative value CAGR of 1% at constant 2015 prices is expected; indicative of a higher average unit price.
