New market study, "Grocery Retailers in Uruguay", has been published

From: Fast Market Research, Inc.

The rapid development of the convenience store channel was the most relevant story in grocery retailing in 2015. Both the Kinko and Frog Maxishop chains expanded their presence, covering more neighbourhoods in Montevideo from their solid bases in Pocitos. However, more important than this was the almost simultaneous launch of several Devoto Express stores from one of the companies in the Casino Guichard-Perrachon group. The company is confident in the future success of this channel and has made known its short-term expansion plans, which should have an impact on the future of Kinko and Frog Maxishop stores.

Competitive Landscape

In 2015, supermarket and hypermarket operators continued to lead grocery retailing in value terms. Ta-Ta SA, after completing the acquisition of Mimatec SA (and its Multi Ahorro supermarkets) and Sistemar SA (Multi Ahorro Express), became the largest chain, covering Montevideo and all departamentos (provinces). The company is still in the process of transferring these supermarket brands to its own Ta-Ta banner. Ta-Ta SA held a 7% value share in 2015, although in GBO terms it held a 9% share.

Industry Prospects

The most important event in grocery retailing over the review period was Ta-Ta’s acquisition of all Multi Ahorro stores, thus consolidating its position as the largest grocery retailer in Uruguay. Although its expansion is expected to slow over the forecast period, the company has already committed to having a presence in at least two new shopping malls which are currently under construction. The emergence of convenience stores under the Kinko and Frog Maxishop banners was the other main event in grocery retailing. The future of Kinko and Frog Maxishop convenience stores could be somewhat compromised by the launch of Devoto Express outlets. However, if the two local chains succeed in gaining the preference of consumers in Pocitos and other mid- to high-income neighbourhoods, they could open new stores in different areas of Montevideo over the forecast period.
