Pledged investment in upstream developments and LNG imports will be crucial to meeting gas demand over the next five years, while t he Zohr discovery could solve Egypt's gas challenges in the long term. Policy slippage with subsidy reform and payment schedules to oil and gas companies, pose the largest risk to slowing the positive momentum.

We highlight the following trends and developments in Egypt's oil and gas sector:

Eni successfully completed the first appraisal well on the Zohr field in March 2016, and is planning a further three wells in the appraisal programme.

Oil production grew marginally at 1% to 685,000b/d in 2015, though has been on a down trend since August 2015.

Gas production fell 9.3% in 2015 to 44.3bcm, though we expect a recovery in output in 2017.

BP brought forward the start date of the West Nile Delta project six months to early 2017.

Refined fuels demand increased 3%, despite subsidy reforms in 2014. Gasoline and diesel saw 10% and 14% growth y-o-y, respectively.

Fuel subsidies will only be reduced 30% by 2020, rather than fully normalised with global prices previously planned. This may support stronger long-term consumption.

Technip will be undertaking a modernisation programme at the Assuit refinery and a 60,000b/d expansion at the MIDOR refinery, with reported support from Italy.
