Cher Finver set out to write her memoir after discovering shocking secrets about her childhood last year. "I had no idea how cathartic writing for hours and pouring my heart out to my laptop would be," Cher explains. But You Look So Good and Other Lies dives into the life of a woman who has faced several traumatic life experiences with grace and a sense of humor.
Q: How did you come up with the title for your book?
A: I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in March of 2000 when I was twenty-five. I want to bring awareness to the fact that not all chronic debilitating medical conditions have symptoms visible to the outside world. When I tell people I have MS, I am often met with, "But You Look So Good." My title is, in part, a play on that. The other lies? Well, I invite you to read my book....
Q: You've dealt with a great deal of personal loss. Can you elaborate?
A: I've lost a spouse and an unborn child. I've also had to grieve the loss of a few family members who live only miles away.
Q: Your book is very honest, maybe too honest. Any reservations there?
A: I'd be lying if I said "no" but I really wanted to pull back the curtain and I think I've done that. Like I say in my book, If I was going to call anyone else out, I had to start with myself. I definitely share a few embarrassing private moments.
Q: Your daughter has been through so much. Why was it important to share her story in your book?
A: Again, to raise awareness. My daughter is strong, beautiful, responsible, and extremely intelligent. She also just happens to bravely battle mental illness very day.
Q: Lastly, what do you want people to take away from your book?
A: That there is a lesson to be learned in whatever you are going through, and to always pick yourself up and keep going.
