Royal Wedding: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Wedding Cake Announcement

Published: Mon Apr 02 2018

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement last November and are going to tie the nuptial knot at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle on 19 May, 2018. They have announced that the honour of making the cake has fallen into the hand of Claire Ptak, who owns London-based bakery Violet Cakes, Kensington Palace.

"Prince Harry and Ms. Markle have asked Claire to create a lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate the bright flavours of spring. It will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers," wrote Kensington Palace on Twitter.

"Prince Harry and Ms. Markle are looking forward to sharing the cake with guests at their wedding at Windsor Castle on May 19th." Ms. Ptak said. Claire Ptak has worked as a pastry chef at Chez Panisse. Later, she moved to the UK. She focuses on using seasonal and organic ingredients in her cakes. Ms. Markle had interviewed her for her former lifestyle website - TheTig.com, which was about food, fashion, beauty and travel. Ms. Ptak revealed that she shares the same values such as sustainability, seasonality, flavour and passion with Meghan.

More than 2600 people have been invited into the Castle Grounds to watch the arrival of the bride and groom. Still, guest list and wedding dress designer details are being enthusiastically awaited.

Royal Wedding Cakes of the Past
Prior to the wedding of Queen Victoria in 1840, the cakes were not considered as an important part of the ceremony.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's cake weighed 300lb.

In the recent royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, there were 2 cakes. The first was an eight-tiered ice cake, decorated with 900 delicate sugar paste flowers and the second was an unbaked chocolate biscuit cake.
