New HBCU Game Debuts At The State Fair Of Texas

SWAC rivals, Texas Southern University (Houston) and Southern University and A&M College (Baton Rouge) will play in the State Fair Football Showdown Saturday, October 20 in the historic Cotton Bowl Stadium; kickoff is at 2 PM. In true HBCU tradition, the marching bands promise an exciting Halftime Show. Texas Southern's band, The Ocean of Soul, has gained a reputation for its sound, heavy beat, precision drills, and intricate dance routines. Southern University's band, The Human Jukebox, has been consistently recognized as one of the top marching bands in the country byUSA Today, the NCAA, and ESPN.

Activities begin Monday, October 15, with a Press Conference in the Dallas City Hall Flag Room, open to the public. Thursday, October 18, Cedar Valley College will host the State Fair Football Showdown College Fair to support the academic enrollment and post-secondary attainment of youth at Cedar Valley College and invited high school students through the Dallas County Promise program, a transformational effort between school districts, colleges, universities, workforce, and communities to increase college completion. At the core, the promise is a scholarship from the Dallas County Community College District Foundation in partnership with matching university scholarships aligned to high-demand jobs.

Friday's events include a Team Luncheon with special guests and alumni; later that evening, a college Battle of the Bands between the Ocean of Soul and the Human Jukebox; and to round-out the evening, an Athletics Department fundraiser – Overtime with Athletic Director Roman Banks.
