Consumer: Million Pixel Madness

Million Pixel Madness

A young boy has questioned the validity of making a million from one website. His conclusion, the world has gone crazy.

[ClickPress, Wed Jan 11 2006] For the past few months the world’s media has watched Alex Tew make a fortune with his million dollar pixel web site. Now, with his million banked, what next? Quietly in the background a 13 year old boy from South Wales has been working away on his own enterprise.

Nicky John is a young entrepreneur with an eye to the future. His venture is not for commerce to throw pots of money into but enables everybody to be part of the internet and share the experience. The inclusive and international nature of his venture, www.treeofnames.com has commentators describing it as “million dollar pixel meets friends reunited”. The site makes all the right noises in terms of ethics, charitable support and cost. “I feel that at £1 (less than 2 dollars) ,it is affordable to everybody”, Nicky commented. “The purpose is to demonstrate unity and reach a global audience; not to demonstrate how much dosh I can make”.

For this home educated boy his enterprise began with the simple idea of a tree with names on but has developed into a global platform with messages left from all over the world. In simple terms it is a notice board with personal messages and links to both home and commercial sites. However, with all the excitement centred on pixel selling, he may just be ready to step in and offer something very different that he at least hopes will have a far greater appeal.

Already clones of his idea are appearing on the internet, which he views as a compliment. Asked if he copied the idea, Nicky explained he had not been aware of the million pixel concept until recently, but was pleased that Tew had met his target. “My objectives are very different than his; 1,000 pixels on Alex’s site cost £100,000 on mine, it’s £10”. Nicky has a vision of unity; bringing people together from every continent, town and village.

His passion is driving him forward as something of a spokesperson for teenagers and a voice for home education. “Unfortunately few people take home educated children seriously. We are normal kids who, for different reasons, did not fit in with the school system. I have learnt more in the past few months than I could ever have done in school”, Nicky explained. “With over a million children now home educated throughout the world we are a sizable group”.

The website makes a small charge to leave details and links although registered charities are free. Funding supports the Noah’s Ark Appeal and also specialist education courses. Emails received by Nicky either condemn his site idea or thank him for bringing some sense in the world. “We live in a very crazy world”, Nicky said, “When you see a million dollars or so spent on one website, I cannot find a more suitable phrase to use than “crazy”.
