Award-wining artist D. Lammie-Hanson will unveil her stunning new series ‘Dared to Be’, A Silverpoint Soulful Experience Friday July 5th, 2019 at the McKenna Museum of African-American Art, 2003 Carondelet St, New Orleans, LA 70130. The event begins at 6pm. Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the Essence Music Festival, Lammie-Hanson designated the ‘Dared to Be’ series as her own tribute to the annual cultural event.
The ‘Dared to Be’ series is a collection of conceptual contemporary portraits of people who are trailblazers in their respective fields, drawn in the image of their "authentic selves". Hanson employed the Renaissance-era Silverpoint technique to create Afro-Futuristic images of giants in music, politics, and culture.
D. Lammie-Hanson is an autodidactic American artist who is known for her contemporary expressionistic portraits. Her emphasis is primarily on the psyche of the silenced individual. Hanson’s iconic 'One Eye, Two Lip' series is a vivid expression of this idea.
As a professional artist, Lammie-Hanson has exhibited in Geneva, Switzerland, Berlin, Atlanta, New Orleans, and Chicago. She held the position of Artist of the Year for Brooklyn Academy of Music's BAM DanceAfrica 2007 in Brooklyn. She was the 2017 New Orleans regional winner of the Bombay Sapphire Artisans Series.
In New Orleans, Lammie-Hanson has shown with the LeMieux Galleries, Jazz and Heritage Foundation Gallery, the Contemporary Arts Center, the Arts Council of New Orleans, Ashe Cultural Arts Center, the George and Leah McKenna Museum of African American Art, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, GW Carver Museum in Dothan, AL and the Wiregrass Museum of Art in Wiregrass, AL, Gallery Guichard, Chicago, IL.
Hanson says of her evolution as an artist, "My past work was used as a catharsis for circumstances of sadness mixed with sensuality of my subjects, mostly of women-of-color, in my monochromatic style in oil and acrylic. Now I tend to celebrate that same sensuality with aspirations of joy. Now I see so much beauty in the women around me.
