Travel & Tourism: THE WOLFMAN JACK IS BACK!

THE WOLFMAN JACK IS BACK!

The legendary American pirate broadcaster, Wolfman Jack, immortalised in the film "Americam Graffiti," is now back on the air broadcasting all over Europe from a high-powered radiostation in Lithuania

[ClickPress, Fri Jul 18 2008] The boom in British pop music during the 1960s, including The Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Kinks, would never have occured had it not been for a fleet of ancient vessels moored three miles off the coast housing pirate radiostations beaming rock and adverts to a teenage audience newly equipped with the lastest technology: personal transistor radios. Similarly in America, the young tuned into a new generation of radio DJs playing their kind of music and talking their kind of talk on high-powered stations just over the border in Mexico.
Star of the Border-Blasters was WOLFMAN JACK, who between the music howled and grunted, told some really good jokes, and won a devoted audience listening in from under the bed-clothes. Their first sight of the famous Wolfman was in the George Lucas fim "American Graffiti," and for years his image and voice was synonamous with Rock'n'Roll.
Although The Wolfman (real name Bob Smith,) died some ten years ago, his broadcasts rock on for those who love the 60s music. Carefully edited tape-recordings of the old radio shows are being replayed by stations in the States, and by the American Forces Radio overseas. A Dutch broadcasting company has bought a licence to rebroadcast the tapes and hires a powerful transmitter near Vilnius in Lithuania to beam the Wolfman all over Europe. The only trouble for fans in the UK is that they'll need a Worldband Radio to receive the signal. Every weekday evening from 10.30 to 11.30 Wolfman Jack rocks the airwaves on 6055kHz shortwaves, complete with the characteristic fading and whistle associated with tuning in to a distant illicit station. There will be those who will tune in religiously every night! HOWWWWL!
