Learning Strategy Must Begin with Alignment, not Fulfilment say Kineo and ASTD
Any learning or e-learning strategy that hopes to effect change in an organisation must start with a simple question: How do we align our learning activities to organisational goals? That’s the conclusion reached by Kineo consultant Mark Harrison of Kineo and the American Society for Training and Development.
[ClickPress, Sun Feb 12 2006] Mark Harrison, a partner with Kineo, the leading e-learning consultancy, recently led a consultation process with over 100 of the UK’s leading learning professionals as part of the UK global network of ASTD. The mission was to identify the characteristics of the most successful learning organisations. Four major traits emerged: Alignment, Effectiveness, Efficiency and Sustainability – and the order matters. “You can set up efficient and effective learning operations, and fulfil various training requests, but if you’re not properly aligned to the business and delivering on operational and strategic objectives, it will never be truly successful – all you will be doing is fulfilling orders and probably not contributing to the long term success of the organisation”.
So what practical steps should the learning professional take? Harrison has developed a focused briefing on alignment to answer that question. It includes an eight step process for alignment, and a 35 point alignment checklist to help organisations audit their alignment with business goals today. It’s available at www.kineo.co.uk/kineo-briefings/alignment-2.html.
Over the coming months, Kineo will publish briefings on the three other key components - effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability - to provide a complete learning strategy master plan. More at www.kineo.co.uk
