[ClickPress, Mon Feb 13 2006] Neil Armstrong, Yuri Gagarin, and Wernher von Braun highlight the latest issue (Vol. 13 #1) of ‘Quest: The History of Spaceflight’, a quarterly journal dedicated to preserving the history of space by capturing the stories that make up the rich history of the space era.
Neil Armstrong’s biographer, Dr. James Hansen, presents a little researched period in Armstrong’s life when the astronaut worked diligently to solve the mystery of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.
The ‘Yuri Gagarin Story’, is a biography of the first person to fly in space. It is told using intertwining stories from the cosmonaut himself, his family, friends, and colleagues.
Wernher von Braun, in a newly discovered 1946 document (a copy of which has been donated by Quest to the Smithsonian), is questioned by Navy rocket pioneer Robert Truax about the technology of the A4 rocket (known by many as the V-2).
The Volume 13 #1 issue also features three articles related to the early U.S. manned space program. Donald Pealer’s oral history interview is with Charles Mathews, the Gemini program manager who also served as Deputy Associate Administrator for Manned Space Flight during the Apollo program. Next, Chris Gainor takes a look at the science requirements and accomplishments during the Apollo 11 mission. Lastly, Yasushi Sato takes a look at the Apollo program and the concept of reliability and the balance of operational and safety requirements.
