Amazon Tree Houses Ltd completes new treehouse in Berwickshire

AYRSHIRE-BASED treehouse building company Amazon Tree Houses Ltd has completed its first major project.

It is a beautiful treehouse on the five-acre property in Duns, Berwickshire looking out over the Cheviot Hills that is home to Gordon and Alyson Farmer and their son Billy.

Not bad going, as the company was only launched in July this year.

But Amazon Tree Houses Ltd managing director and treehouse builder Derek Saunderson and world-renowned treehouse designer Gordon Brown have many years experience of constructing treehouses all over the UK.

Derek (36) based in Cronberry in Ayrshire, Scotland, brings an entirely fresh approach to treehouse building.

He says: "At Amazon Tree Houses Ltd our aim is to bring the craft of treehouse building back from the accountants and salesmen, and put it back firmly in the hands of the craftsmen whose passion for treehouse building shows in their skill and commitment for creating beautiful and natural structures."

Derek and Gordon have been working closely together to come up with a series of increasingly innovative and intricate designs.

The treehouse that they have just completed for the Farmer family in Berwickshire is sited in a Sitka spruce tree. It has four windows, a red pine interior, and cedar shingles on the roof. Inside is a cosy space with L-shaped benches, piles of cushions to sit on and a collection of native masks from Borneo.

The family treetop retreat is powered by its own electricity supply, and sports a wicker basket on a rope which can be used to hoist up snacks and drinks. People access is by wooden stairs or alternatively, for the more adventurous, by rope ladder.

The new treehouse perfectly complements the rest of the Farmer family property, and has gone down well with their domestic menagerie of two dogs, 15 ducks, five peacocks, nine turkeys, 20 hens and two geese.
