Bob Harris Named Angel Flight® Southeast’s SC Pilot of the Year

Angel Flight Southeast, a division of Angel Flight® America, is an IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit volunteer pilot organization involved in "public benefit flying." The organization arranges free air transportation by private aircraft to distant medical facilities when commercial service is not available, impractical or simply not affordable. AFSE coordinates flights for patients living in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. Through its membership in Angel Flight America, AFSE arranges flights with other AFA regional members to transport patients outside the southeast when necessary.

"Pilots like Bob perform a wonderful public service," said Deborah Deal, President and CEO of AFSE, Inc. "There are many people who would have to forgo critical medical care or humanitarian assistance if not for the generosity of our pilots. Our pilots donate their time; fuel and all associated operating costs for their plane in order to help their community. This cost can be as large as $1,200 or more depending on the type of aircraft and mission distance. Truly, Angel Flight Southeast’s pilots are very deserving of the title "Angel." The organization's Pilot of the Year is determined by the number of missions successfully completed in each state.

Harris, 56, volunteered for 10 missions in 2004 and successfully completed seven. Missions are sometimes cancelled when a passenger has a health issue or there are weather concerns.

Harris joined the organization in 2002 and volunteered for his first mission on March 24, 2003. That year, Harris successfully completed five missions.

"Pilots like to fly, and this provides a chance for me to have a meaningful flying experience," Harris said. "Most importantly, however, my association with Angel Flight Southeast allows me the opportunity to help others who need assistance."

Harris is a member of the East Cooper Pilots Association. The group flies out of East Cooper Airport in nearby Mount Pleasant, S.C.
