Clare County Council Extends The Range Of Services At Recycling Centres

The new facility will enable householders in the greater Shannon and West Clare areas to dispose of green waste at their local recycling centres. The service is already available at recycling centres in Ennis and Inagh.

Material collected at all centres is brought to the composting plant at the Council’s Central Waste Management Facility in Ballyduffbeg, near Inagh.

Mayor of Clare, Councillor Madeleine Taylor-Quinn welcomed the further extension of facilities at County Clare’s recycling centres.

She said, "The Regional Waste Management Plan for Limerick, Clare and Kerry has set ambitious objectives for waste prevention, reuse and recycling. To date, a recycling rate of 35% had been achieved in Clare, which is well above the national average. Householders can continue to improve the recycling rate by composting organic food waste, using reusable shopping bags and continuing to use the Council’s Recycling Centres".

Robert Burns, Senior Executive Engineer in the Council’s Environment Section noted that there was a wide range of material that could now be recycled at the centres.

"All Electrical Items (WEEE), Textiles, Batteries and Fluorescent Light Bulbs are accepted free of charge with a nominal charge for other items. Home Composters can also be purchased at all centres. The Council has reduced the charge to €40 which includes a 330 litre composter, base and kitchen caddy", commented Mr. Burns.

He added, "Organic Waste, such as food scraps can be easily composted and can represent up to 50% of total household waste. Composting of organic waste will help to reduce domestic waste bills as well as diverting waste away from landfill."

The Council operates 5 Civic Amenity Sites throughout the county at Lisdeen, Kilkee; next to Smithstown Industrial Estate, Shannon; Fossabeg, Scariff; Gort Road Industrial Estate, Ennis; and Ballyduff Beg, Inagh.
