UK Obesity site celebrates its first successful year

www.bigmatters.co.uk was established in May 2004 to provide a unique service in allowing people within the UK who are living with obesity to have an opportunity of sharing experiences whilst at the same time offering the chance to find information about many aspects of daily life in one central place.

Whilst the problems of dealing with the rise in obesity in the UK are being discussed amongst professionals and governments the practical issues be they finding emotional support, clothing, health issues etc are a minefield on the internet.

Bigmatters has given the chance for this all to be brought together and for people to feel that they can be involved in the future and expansion of the site.

A spokesperson for Big Matters said "we have been absolutely delighted with the response we have had since the launch last year, we have heard from people throughout the UK, individuals and professionals alike. What has been made even clearer is that what is being done to help deal with obesity in the UK is nowhere near enough - emotional issues are not being addressed, health related problems are spiralling and people feel isolated.

Asking a nation to eat healthier and exercise more is not as straightforward as it sounds. People often know what they should eat but find that the cost of buying fruit, vegetables, fish etc is prohibitive and packaging very misleading. Shops are making billions of profits and some of this money should be passed down to the consumer by making real healthy food available at a low price. If you want to get a nation active then provide NATIONWIDE incentives – It is very daunting to go swimming or embark on an exercise programme if you are overweight – classes should be affordable and geared specifically to people of all sizes.

We hope that the coming year will see more being implemented to make a real change. The issue of obesity cannot be underestimated, we have heard many tales of despair and great courage and we will continue our work in evolving bigmatters as a positive and informative focus for people of all ages throughout the UK."

www.bigmatters.co.uk centralises information on a variety of issues effecting daily life for people in the UK living with obesity or weight related problems.
