Beware Buildings Falling

Some say that when a butterfly flaps its wings in Beijing and a plane falls out of the sky in New York. If that is the case who is sneezing where, to cause multi-storey buildings to collapse?

First there was the 13-storey Lotus Riverside apartment building in Minhang, Shanghai, China, that simply fell over. Fortunately it was before anyone had occupied the building. It was being excavated to cater for an underground garage. The original developers' company has been shut down while the government investigates the matter. Prospective home owners are demonstrating against the unfair compensation they have received.

A No. 9 building complex of Zhongxiang Longbowan residential area in Minhang, has been steadily sinking over the past four weeks. The back of the building has risen about 2.5 cm above the ground, while the remainder of the building has sunk almost 10 cm. That is an increase of 6 cm in just one month. People are still residing in the building. Even though the incident has been reported to the authorities, no one has attempted to do anything to deal with the problem.

In Taitung a five storied hotel toppled into the raging torrent of a flooded river. This followed Typhoon Morakot, which hit Taiwan, causing a mudslide that buried an entire village, while the inhabitants were asleep. Around 4 to 600 people are still missing. "A part of the mountain above us just fell on the village", said one shocked survivor.

With Typhoon Morakot dumping up to 80 inches of rain over the weekend Taiwan is experiencing the worst flooding in fifty years. The waves reached heights of 26 feet, as around 2,000 houses collapsed.

Typhoon Morakot swept across into China, causing the evacuation of nearly 1 million people. Typhoon Morakot had killed 22 people in the Philippines. As a result of Tyhpoon Morakot five apartment buildings have collapsed in China.
Japan in the north was slammed with Tyhpoon Etau, killing 12 people, with 10 still missing.
