Beyond the Border Art Fair Celebrates Artistic Temperament with Dinner & Conversation to Benefit Cal

Beyond the Border International Contemporary Art Fair features a special event: Celebrating the Artistic Temperament, a conversation with Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison and artist Miguel Cordera. The special dinner and conversation will benefit the California Bipolar Foundation and is scheduled for Friday, September 4, 2009 at 7:00 pm in the Elizabeth Capella room at The Grand Del Mar Hotel.

The acclaimed speakers, include:
Kay Redfield Jamison Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and writer who is one of the foremost experts on bipolar disorder, having suffered from the illness since she was seventeen. She is Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and is an Honorary Professor of English at the University of St Andrews.

Jamison began her study of clinical psychology at University of California, Los Angeles in the late 1960s, receiving both B.A. and M.A. degrees in 1971. She continued on at UCLA, receiving a Ph.D. in 1975, and became a faculty member at the university. She went on to found and direct the school's Affective Disorders Clinic. It was during her time at UCLA that Jamison's manic depression took serious hold of her life and helped determine her career path.

Dr. Jamison is the co-author of the standard medical text on bipolar illness, and author of several other books, including An Unquiet Mind, Night Falls Fast, Exuberance, Nothing Was the Same, and Touched with Fire: Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament, a book that examines the relationship between bipolar disorder and artistic creativity.

Miguel Angel Cordera is one of Mexico's most respected and talented artists. He attended the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City studying graphic design, while simultaneously studying Visual Arts at the National Academy of Art, "San Carlos" in Mexico City. Cordera has also taken art courses at RISD in Providence, R.I.

Since 1998 he is completely devoted to art and runs a gallery space in Mexico City with other artists. His work has been shown in Mexico, United States, France, Germany, Poland, Egypt and other countries.

Miguel Angel was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 26, like other artists, some of his work regards self portraiture in different moods of the illness. In addition to his art work, he speaks frequently at conferences about art and mental illness.

California Bipolar Foundation (CBF) is a not for profit, tax exempt organization whose mission is threefold: to eliminate Bipolar Disorder through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support services for all affected; and to erase associated stigma through public education.

CBF holds free, confidential weekly caregiver support groups throughout North & San Diego counties, free monthly sibling support groups, an e-newsletter, My Support, annual Mental Health Fair, Family Picnic, outreach and referral, grant support, etc.

Event Overview:
San Diego’s first Beyond the Border International Contemporary Art Fair (BTB), taking place at the luxurious Grand Del Mar Resort in Del Mar, California on September 2-4, 2009, is a three-day contemporary art fair that will include national and international galleries featuring over 500 juried works by established and emerging contemporary artists from all over the world, exhibiting in The Grand Del Mar’s expansive ballroom accompanied by numerous luxury exhibitors, food and wine events, and curated art installations.
