A six-day volleyball referee clinic to train regional referees officiating in matches to an international standard concluded today (May 22nd) with as many as 38 referees from seven countries participating. The clinic was jointly organised by the UAE Volleyball Association (UAE VA), Abjad Sports and Events and the Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB).

"Referees from Egypt, Iran, Kuwait, Palestine, Syria, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates participated in the six-day event that was designed to raise standards of refereeing in the region," said UAE VA Secretary General, Jassim Ali Rajab.

He noted that 26% of the participating referees were women. "This augurs well for the sport of volleyball in the region as interest in professional volleyball has grown substantially and the sports’ popularity over the past several years has seen an increasing number of women taking to volleyball in the region and thus the substantial increase in the number of women referees," Mr. Ali Rajab observed.

The Dubai clinic was conducted by FIVB Referee Delegate and Beach Volleyball Instructor Jeff Brehaut at the Satwa sports ground with the support of the General Authority of Youth and Sports.

Dubai will play host to the final leg of the Swatch FIVB World Tour, a world ranking Men's Beach Volleyball tournament in November 2005.

Beach volleyball is the latest trend in the sport. It is safer and results in fewer injuries and is also more challenging.
