First Date Conversation Dos and Don’ts

Members of MumsDateDads.co.uk, a dating for parents site for single mums and dads looking for love, are a great source of ideas and opinions from their own experiences, so for those starting out dating and are parents already, they have offered some dos and don’ts as suggestions:

Don’t begin with religious or political topics as these can tend to be the more contentious subjects and shouldn’t be broached until you know each other much better.

Don’t talk endlessly about the children - Keep any talking about the children as superficial and to a minimum – the members advise this mostly because the date is about you two and is a chance to discuss about other things with another adult!

Don’t constantly talk about yourself - make it mostly about your date by asking questions about themselves and keep it light but delving further, rather than too broadly. That way you find out what excites the other person.

Do show excitement about life through the positive things you say as this comes across as the first stage in seduction which is very alluring.

Do show off a sense of humour and ability to laugh at yourself. Think beforehand about a safe but amusing story that has happened to you. This can very often lead to your date doing the same and helps them to relax.

Do leave the other person feeling better about them self. As the aim is to gain another date (if that’s the case!), it is very satisfying to know someone else feels better in themself but also it shows you in a very good light.

Andy Hammonds, founder of MumsDateDads says, "A lot of what our members say here is true with their insightful advice, and so makes it easier, hopefully, for others to follow. Conversations are hard to strike up at the best of times, but on a first date with someone you’ve never met face-to-face before, it takes courage and a great deal of character, and that’s what our members bring to bear."

MumsDateDads is free to join, enabling you to browse the site and view thousands of single parents’ profiles. You can pay a small subscription fee securely online or via your mobile phone which will allow you to create and view video profiles, send personal messages, and offer virtual themed gifts. As a member you can also use your mobile to upload photos to your profile as well as receive text messages notifying you that other single parents have sent you a message.
