Leeds College of Technology’s Network Academy has added specialist cyber crime fighters, SSR-i’s Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) course to its portfolio of courses for IT professionals in West Yorkshire.

Paul Titman, Leeds College’s business manager for computing, explained: "The Network Academy provides a wide range of Microsoft and Cisco technical training – mostly for IT professionals from organisations in the Leeds and West Yorkshire area, although a few of our 400 or so part time students, looking for a change of career, fund these courses themselves.

"We wanted to offer the SSR-i/EC-Council CEH course because it is not only vendor-neutral but also of a high quality.

"The CEH qualification is highly respected and sought after throughout the world," he added. "Consequently, we wanted to make it available to those in the Leeds area."

Rajive Kapoor, of SSR-i, said: "Computers around the world are systematically being victimised by hacking that is not only widespread, but is being executed so well that the attackers compromise a system, steal everything of value and completely erase their tracks within 20 minutes.

"The goal of the ethical hacker is to help the organisation take pre-emptive measures against malicious attacks by attacking the system him/herself; all the while staying within legal limits," he added. "This philosophy stems from the proven practice of trying to catch a thief by thinking like a thief.

"If hacking involves creativity and thinking 'out-of-the-box', then vulnerability testing and security audits will not ensure the security-proofing of an organisation. To ensure that organisations have adequately protected their information assets, they must adopt the approach of 'defence in depth' – penetrating their own networks and assessing them for vulnerabilities and exposure."

The Network Academy begins running CEH courses in November and plans to introduce further SSR-i anti-cyber crime courses in the New Year.

About the Certified Ethical Hacker Programme
The Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) Programme certifies individuals in the specific network security discipline of Ethical Hacking from a vendor-neutral perspective. The CEH certification strengthens the application knowledge of security officers, auditors, security professionals, site administrators and anyone else who is concerned about the integrity of the network infrastructure. A CEH is a skilled professional who understands and knows how to look for the weaknesses and vulnerabilities in target systems and uses the same knowledge and tools as a malicious hacker.

About SSR-i
SSR-i has been formed as the master distributor in the UK and Europe for the products developed by the EC-Council – the international organisation driving standards and skills for e-Commerce Consultants.

The launch platform in the UK is the Licensed Penetration Tester programme that allows organisations to test their networks using the approaches and techniques that hackers would use. This program develops skills for Ethical Hacking, Forensics and Penetration Testing that will identify weaknesses and plug them – before malicious hackers get to them.

SSR-i programmes are delivered via some 90 delivery locations throughout Europe in association with its group of European partners including Training Camp and ASG training in the UK; New Horizons and Training Camp in Germany; Upgrade and GED Systemes in France; GKN in the Netherlands and Denmark.

SSR-i’s courses include:
• Licensed Penetration Tester (LPT) – which allows organisations to test their networks using approaches and techniques that hackers would use.
• Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) - certifies individuals in the specific network security discipline of ethical hacking from a vendor-neutral perspective.
• Certified Security Analyst (ECSA) – the next step for IT and information security professionals who have already achieved the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification.
• Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI) – which enables organisations to identify a path that an intruder took over the network; reveal intermediate intrusions and provide leads and corroborating evidence for disciplinary action.
• Disaster Recovery
• Security 5 - an entry level training and certification for those interested in computer networking and security basics, to help them guard their information assets.
