On March 12th, Delphi Academy of San Francisco Bay student Nikita Dhesikan received an Honorable Mention at the Marine Masterpieces awards ceremony at the Seymour Marine and Discovery Center. The Marine Masterpieces art contest and exhibition is an annual marine art contest for K-12 students.
Dhesikan won for Whitecoat, her picture of a white seal coming out of the ocean, and this picture is now on display for all visitors to view. And with the Delphi Academy's emphasis on interacting with the world outside the classroom to connect what they are studying with the real world, some of these visitors have included her classmates as the fourth and fifth grade class of Delphi Academy visited the Center to view the art display and learn about marine life.
The children learned about the Center’s philosophy, which is to increase public awareness of the results of pollution and not taking proper care of the Earth’s oceans. This was very enlightening for them. They also learned about the Center as a research facility for marine life.
There were many exhibits available for the children to see and touch, including a skeleton of a gray whale and a transparent egg from a gray shark. But their favorite was the touch pool, where they were able to actually touch and pick up the various sea creatures in this salt-water pool.
"It was fun to see and touch all of the animals and I really liked the whale skeleton a lot."
Nisha Nanduri – 4th grade student
