Demand for sandals is on the rise at as daylight savings herald the coming of spring holidays and the warm summer months.

After such a long cold winter there will soon be glorious days of summer to come. The recent daylight saving hour may have people moaning about losing an hour’s sleep, but it signals the start of spring for many and the start of preparation for warm sunny days. A spectacular spring has been predicted which has given the general public the motivation to start getting their summer wardrobes prepared in the hope that they will get much more usage this year if the spring turns out to be a scorcher as predicted.

At preparations were made long in advance as many people start to think about getting kitted out for summer no sooner than the New Year’s celebrations are over and the hangover is starting to ease. Sandals are actually year round solid sellers providing the perfect footwear for winter sun breaks and as a slipper substitute due to their exceptional comfort and arch support. However sales start to step up a gear following the first decent run of weather, and with spring now well underway sandals start to dominate the top seller lists one again.

Hot weather invariably sees people heading to the beach en masse with beach sandals being a popular footwear choice. The new styles from sandal giants Merrell, Keen, and Birkenstock offer class and comfort for the summer and the perfect footwear for sandier terrain. This year has already seen an explosion of new women’s styles in the Merrell Siren and Siena ranges, offering a chic fashionable lightweight shoe which is equally at home on the high street as the beach.

The outdoor enthusiasts favourite Keen still provides some of the best quality models on the market however Luke Barlow, MD at, is quick to point out that "Birkenstock remain everyone's favourite brown leather sandals." The stalwarts of summer sandals see year round sales of warm weather footwear, being the preferred sandal to take overseas for a little winter sun. Barlow goes onto say that "everyone loves the classic styling and high comfort they offer when the temperatures start to soar".

When it comes to getting the maximum usage of sandals, easy combination with any outfit is almost as important as the weather. Brown leather sandals such as those provided by Birkenstock are some of the easiest footwear to combine with a wide range of outfits and work equally well as casual footwear as for getting to the beach. High quality construction, double stitching and an anatomically moulded cork footbed see them provide coolness and comfort for more than one season, offering excellent value for money and a classic style which is unlikely to go out of fashion.

However, the recent rise in popularity of athletic outdoor pursuits, has see the more functional multisport and hiking sandal models catch up as people opt for a more robust trainer alternative for walking, cycling and general casual wear. The technologies from specialist hiking footwear has been incorporated into modern sandal designs and offer the same level of comfort and support as their winter counterparts, for the spring though to autumn.

In spite of the infamously unpredictable British summer, nothing seems to be dampening the spirits of customers as summer sandal season begins in earnest. With such a good weather forecast and the new stylish chic additions to this year’s summer sandals collections, it is expected that this year will see bumper sandal sales over the coming months as they start to dominate footwear sales figures.
